What is a KPI Scorecard?

A KPI scorecard (also called a performance scorecard or KPI dashboard) is a structured summary of your most important metrics alongside their targets and current performance. The Red/Amber/Green (RAG) status system makes it immediately clear where a team is on track and where intervention is required — without having to read every number.

In operational excellence frameworks like Hoshin Kanri and Lean, scorecards are reviewed in weekly or monthly cadence meetings. Teams use them to escalate issues, track countermeasure progress, and confirm that annual objectives are on course.

Frequently asked questions

What is a KPI scorecard? +

A KPI scorecard shows your key performance indicators alongside their targets and current actuals, with a color-coded status (green / amber / red) so you can see at a glance where performance is on track and where action is needed.

How is performance status calculated? +

For higher-is-better KPIs: Green if actual is ≥ 95% of target, Amber if ≥ 80%, Red below that. For lower-is-better KPIs (e.g. scrap rate, lead time): Green if actual is ≤ 105% of target, Amber if ≤ 120%, Red above that.

What is the difference between leading and lagging KPIs? +

Lagging KPIs measure outcomes (e.g. on-time delivery %). Leading KPIs measure inputs or in-process behaviours that predict future outcomes (e.g. schedule adherence %). A good scorecard includes both.

How many KPIs should be on a scorecard? +

Keep it focused. 5–10 KPIs for a team or value stream is a common starting point. If you track more, consider splitting by function or level (strategic vs. operational).

Do I need an account to use this tool? +

No. You can build and use the scorecard without signing up. An email is only needed to export a PDF.
